Cub Scout Pack 501 Goes Medieval When Learning About STEM
Cub Scout Pack 501 was a pilot Pack for the National Capitol Area Council STEM Program for the Boy Scouts of America.
There are 4 different awards that a Cub Scout can earn, each associated with one of the themes of STEM.
Having completed the Math and Science NOVA STEM awards, Pack 501 is currently working on the third subject area. This one is focused on Engineering. As part of this theme, the Cub Scouts learned all about simple machines with a focus on levers. As part of their STEM meetings, Pack 501 brought in a special guest from local Boy Scout Troop 964, including a full scale trebuchet!!
The scouts went over the mechanics of the trebuchet and how it is a lever. They got to watch it toss soccer balls nearly the entire length of a football field and each got a chance to try to reload it. (None were able to as it requires 600 pounds of force to overcome the mechanical advantage. That's the science of levers!)
Pack 501 plants 500 pine tree seedlings at Prince William Forest
one of Cub Scout Pack 501's recent spring service projects was to plant 500 pine tree seedlings in Prince William Forest as part of an effort to repopulate the open area on the northwest side of the forest with trees. The area had been cleared years ago when a road and a gold mining operation was once present.
The new seedlings will help with soil conservation and the greenhouse effect.

STEM: Ice Hockey Lessons!
Prince William Ice Center put together a great program for us!
It was cool seeing all of our scouts decked out in full hockey gear. They were only missing
Pack 501 Hockey Jerseys!
We were glad to see the boys try their best out on the ice (even when it seemed easier
to just lie there.)

Trip to the Circus!
Elephants, tigers and.... DRAGONS?!
This was one of the most impressive circuses that we have seen!
The Scouts, siblings and parents all had a great time.
Some of our Scouts got called out to do things in the ring during the preshow performances.
(And the Cubmaster got to see elephants! He likes elephants)
It was truly the greatest show on earth.
Top Sellers Day with the Washington Nationals
Congratulations to our Top Sellers who enjoyed the pregame Top Seller's Picnic:
Tristin Youtz, Zachary Malich, Nicholas Malich, and Jake Hill.
Congrats to the rest of our Top Sellers who got to enjoy the game.
(To bad that the weather couldn't have been better... next year, but you've got to sell,
sell, sell.)
Our Pack's Top Seller was only $400 short of being on the field too! New goal for next year! |

|
 |
We had an amazing Blue and Gold banquet! (Truly, the Force was with us.)
Thank you Sue Straka and her team of volunteers for the planning and operations.
Thanks to the Garrison Tyranus branch of the 501st for coming out and supporting us!!
Activities ranged from a lego pit, to origami and crafts, to remote controlled Star Wars toys and a "photon torpedo" toss at the
Death Star trench run.
Star Wars decorations spread all over the Sacred Heart community hall with a special display of collectables from our Cubmaster.
We had a feast fit for the Emperor himself including wamp-rat on a stick, roast bantha, Hoth potatoes and, of course, Yoda Soda!
We raised over $162 for the Make A Wish Foundation with our Shoot A Trooper event.

|
A special thanks to all of our sponsors who donated awesome prizes!!
Several Star Wars Collectables from our Charter Organization: Friends of Pack 501.
Spring STEM Kick Off - Swing (Levers!)
I love, love, love a lever. (Love a lever, love a lever!)
This is a tough subject to try to teach and have fun, but we believe that the boys who attended got off
to a great start and really seemed to understand the simple tool - levers.
More fun stuff to follow for our STEM Scouts!

December Highlights
Thank you Scouters for your generosity!
At the Pack's December Pack Meeting/Holiday Party, we collected toys and gifts for charity as well as started on supplies for the Children's Room at the ACTS Families In Crisis shelter.
The Cubmaster's minivan was filled and the spillover took up the entire back seat of our COR's car.
Great job Pack 501!

Special Delivery to the staff at ACTS.
The ladies were overwhelmed with the number of presents and supplies that the Pack provided. A lot of people are going to be very happy for the holidays that would not have been within out the help.
Go Scouters! |

November
Scouting For Food
Scouting For Food is the largest combined community service project for all of Scouting done each year.
Tens of thousands of pounds of food is collected by scouts from their communities to help support those less fortunate each year around the holidays.
This was Pack 501's first year collect food in a new neighborhood.
We collected for for both ACTS as well as pet for for the Prince William County Animal Shelter. (We are the only Pack in the area to do this as well.)
There were a lot of empty porches, but we had some very generous supporters as well.
We collected 920 pounds of food and nearly 30 pounds of pet food!!!
Thank you to all of the boys and parents who helped spread the word (flyers and bags) on November 3rd and for those who helped to
collect on November 10th. |

Santa's Old Bridge Parade
A swarm of scouts decended on our Cubmaster's house the night before the parade to build our float.
Much paint was flung and hot chocolate sipped, but in the end we had a semblance of a float.
The next morning, 27 of our Cub Scouts participated in Santa's Old Bridge parade.
Toys were "made" by our Santa's helpers, gifts were carried for delivery, bells were rung and our cheers were merry!!

October was a busy month with all of our new Scouts coming on board. We signed up our 60th Scout this month!!
Popcorn sales and the Halloween Fundraiser is still going strong. Thanks to all who are supporting!
We kicked the month off with participating in Star Wars Reads Day.
Books A Million may not have been prepared, but good scouts always are! Pack 501 jumped in and had a great time!
|
Thanks to all of our supporters
from our Halloween
Costume Fundraiser!
 |
Pack 501 also had the honor of being the Color Guard for St. Thomas Aquinas' Fall Festival held at John Paul the Great Catholic High School!
We also had our first Fall Campout!
Over 20 boys were able to get away for the weekend as well as parents and siblings.
We had an old fashioned campout with the boys learning trails signs, hiking safety, fishing, outdoor skills and other fun activities.
It was a bit chilly, but it was great time!!
We also had a great Pack Meeting this month followed by our Halloween Party.
We had lots of fun and great costumes!!
|
 |
Our final activities for the month included participation in the Healthy Kids Fun Run and Kids Day at the Washington Internation Horse Show.
We had 24 Scouts and siblings signed up for the USMC Healthy Kids Fun Run!
Our Scouts did their best and everyone finished with pride!
Several of boys ran downtown DC after the run to enjoy Kids Day at the Washington Internation Horse Show.
They got to care for horses, run a course just like the jumping course for horse, go for a ride and other activities including getting into the show for free! Most of the boys had never seen a horse show before and were pretty impressed and amazed!
September
Back to School Time!!
Before some headed back to school, but not all, we had our Labor Day Picnic at Lakeridge Park and Marina.
The scouts, parents and siblings walked the many trails and collected several bags of trash before the fun began.
The boys played games. There was a ton of food from our potluck picnic. And we held our first Pack meeting of the year where....
the first place trophy from this summer's 4th of July Parade was shared!!!
September also means Popcorn sales time.
Our Pack has been holding Popcorn Booths all over Prince William County.
Overall, we have been doing well, but we hope to continue going strong in October and end in November.
We held our Join Scouting Night and had a GREAT turn out!
Thank you so much to all those who attended.
A big shout out also goes to two of our Webelos, Kyle and Tristin, as well as one of our Wolves, Brennon, who lead our guest potential scouts in games, skits and the start of their Bobcat in the cafeteria/gym while the parents were talking about scouting.
The September Pack meeting was great!
We signed up 16 new boys and passed out tons of awards, ribbons, patches and pins that the boys earned over the summer.
A special congrats to Kyler for earning his Webelos rank. |
Thanks to everyone who came out and supported Pack 501
and the American Red Cross
by donating blood at Potomac Mills
on Sunday, Sept. 23rd.
